Can’t Get You Out Of My Head

No, it’s not about Kylie, but the subject makes me want to mindlessly sing “Lah la la, la la la lah…” Ever since I found out about Shindy.TV, it’s frakked with my head. To make matters worse, it’s not pronounced Shindy dot TV, but ShindyTV. It sounds a little too similar to website name of yours truly.

What is Shindy.TV exactly? It’s a website that gives information on the various happenings in San Diego. You can get info on restaurants, nightclubs, and some superfun events. Being true to the .TV domain name, ShindyTV goes out into the field and has correspondents give us mortals the skinny on what’s going on.

As for the name, it gets to me for the reason I’ve mentioned above. In all fairness, they are Shindy.TV and my website is ShindoTV. Two different entities altogether. Shindy simply is a synonym of shindig, an event or happening. Strange thing is, one of my older nicknames was Shindig. When your name is Shin, the nicknames seem to come without end. Shindo was another one I had, one that I’ve used as a pen name to this day. I’ve never been a Shindy, but it’s a little too close for comfort.

Now that Shindy.TV has a presence on Twitter, no doubt some confusion will arise. Keep in mind they are Shindy_TV and I am shindotv.

That all said, name confusions aren’t always bad.

Shindo.TV

For the longest time, I thought Shindo.TV was unavailable. It was about 8 years ago. It was probably one of those domain names that Dot TV was sitting on. However, I found out a few days ago that it was indeed available.

One thing indeed leads to another, basic cause and effect. I had a bizarre discovery: Shindy.TV. It was very bizarre and disconcerting to say the least, because it sounds a little too much ShindoTV. It then got me to remembering how I never could get Shindo.TV as a domain name and how frustrating that was because it was so perfect. This time, just for the hell of it, I checked to see if it was available. This time, it was.

I was so stoked. I quickly registered Shindo.TV. That’s all I wanted.

Now comes the part I’m not too crazy about: Dot TV itself. With the domain registration, one gets a website kit if one chooses to use it. So far so good. However, Dot TV is a little too MySpace‘ish and it seems like that’s what they’re shooting for. Despite having two profiles on that social networking site, I hate MySpace. All I see my profiles as are antennas to point the way to this channel and that’s it. The Dot TVtemplates look better than what’s on MySpace, but there’s still something god-awfully gawdy about them.

While I’m all for keeping things simple to make things easy, the user interface is simply too dumbed down. It was more difficult to find the function to redirect my newly registered domain to a website, and the help page really didn’t offer that much help. In fact, the help page was the shortest one I’ve ever seen on a website. I couldn’t find the information I needed to redirect the URL, and I only found the function through trial and error.

I initially directed Shindo.TV to this blog, but I decided to use it for the podcast. which is still in development right now. I’ll bring up the Dot TV domain name when it’s time to launch.
