Better Than Ice Cream

The monsters people create sometimes. In this case, I got a little bee happy from a blog entry from Brian. He posted something about Haagen Dazc‘s* campaign to save the honey bee, complete with its own website, which creates awareness of the bee population problem. There, you can experience a Second Life of sorts for bees in which you fly your bee avatar around and get some educational tidbits about how some things really depend on these tiny creatures. There’s also a fun application where you can create your own bee image. I got a little too carried away.

I created a couple more of them and put them up on Flickr. I then had to slap myself to stop creating more, especially when it came to creating a bee that could either look like Michael Jackson or Victoria Beckham. Somehow, I think the bee gods would see to it that I get stung.

*Practically unspellable ice cream.

Violently Happy?

I got this piece of Bjork news from my friend Sharon. It takes courage to approach Bjork, as a photographer in Auckland, New Zealand found out. Like the incident in Bangkok over a decade ago, Bjork was apprehended by a member of the press at the airport. She, of course, didn’t take too kindly to his picture taking.

There will probably be a vid of this incident later on YouTube, but it involves torn clothing (the photographer) and Bjork falling on the ground. All I have to say about it is that he should have known better. To quote Perez, “Don’t mess with Bjork. She’ll fuck you up!”

It Takes Courage To Enjoy It

A friend of mine sent me an MP3 of Bjork‘s “Arabadrengurinn.” It’s from her first proper album (not to be confused with Debut) and the song sounds like Japanese children’s music on speed. To quote her from “Big Time Sensuality,” it takes courage to enjoy it.

Bjork has nothing on Thom Yorke of Radiohead when it comes to weirdness. Here’s the classic “No Suprises” from 10 years ago. Brilliant song. Video, however, is a bit disturbing.

Funny Bjork Quote

Chris has posted a funny quote from Bjork. I love Bjork (at least her music, anyway) and some of the daffy things she does (it’s safe to say Chris doesn’t like her at all). Then, there are the overall daft things she says, such as an example mentioned by my cyber-pal:

“I cannot imagine anything better than having a conversation about giraffes and why they are not blue.”

I have to admit, I’m laughing my arse off at that one. At least she isn’t bitch-slapping reporters in Bangkok.

Some of Bjork’s Royal Opera House Performances

Judging from the last reaction to my “Pagan Poetry” post, I chose not to post the “vid” Bjork made for “Cocoon.” Instead, here are some clips from the Royal Opera House concert she did shortly after the release of Vespertine. Matmos, the programming duo who provide the dirty electronic sounds, are also boyfriends and how they interact here is very sweet. Here’s “Cocoon”:

La Jalousie, La Jalousie

Bjork has performed at Coachella and I didn’t go! Argh! Lucky bastards who got see her.

With hotel prices inflated along with exhorbitant ticket prices, this article in LA times tells all so far. The lesson for going to a major music festival is to plan ahead, buy the tickets as early as possible (to avoid the scalpers), and book the airlines (if necessary) and hotels way before they sniff the event in their calendars and jack up their rates.

Hopefully, she’ll have a So Cal appearance in the future, but that may not happen and I’m not sure if I want to shell out airfare just for one show. If she showed up in DC, I wouldn’t mind going there to catch her show one night and Blowoff another night. Plus, there’s plenty else to do there. As much as I want to hear the new album, going somehere to catch a show has got to be worthwhile.

Bringing Sexy Back With Volta: Bjork Podcast

Here’s the Bjork podcast (which you can also download into your iPod from iTunes). Here, in three installments, Bjork speaks of the making of Volta, how she came to work with Timbaland, and her choice of instruments.

For anyone who’s had any question of how the collaboration with Timbaland came into being, she gives the answer: she’s known him for 11 years and they have been meaning to work together on a project. Given that she has looked to him to add something to it, along with Mark Bell (who contributed to Homogenic), this should be very interesting.

One of the fascinating things about Bjork interviews is when she goes into creating the sounds. She looked into using horns and “dirty” sounding stringed instruments. She mentions Vespertine used clean sounding ones, such as harps. She also seeks a sound that’s more “pagan.” Gotta love her word choices.

Note: video’s safe to watch–no Bjork boobies to traumatize the viewer.
