Rest In Peace…

Internet, blogging 2 Comments

In my late night Net-browsing, I came across this obituary on Queerty, only it was about a blog, not a person. The Boi from Troy abruptly wished his readers farewell.

A year and some time ago, Scott-O-Rama took a sabbatical from blogging and planned a comeback. He even set up a spiffy blog template a few months ago to return in style. Ironically, his most significant post after makeover was one to say goodbye. He even took it a step further and got rid of much of his social networking accounts such as Twitter and Flickr.

Both blogs had large readerships and were heavily blogrolled. Both felt blogging became more of a chore than something they wanted to do after a while, so they called it quits at some point. They were big trees in their niche of the blogosphere forest and we heard them fall.

I try to tell myself that this blog is for me, which isn’t completely true. I am transmitting my signal out there for readers to respond to. Over the course of the past couple of years, with a few social networking systems out there, some people did respond, and I in turn answered their signals as well.

BSG Webisodes: Face of the Enemy

Gaeta and “Sweet Eight.” There’s something more to this chance meeting.

To hold us over until Battlestar Galactica 4.5 this January, Sci Fi Channel is running a 10 webisode series entitled “The Face of the Enemy,” where Felix Gaeta is in the middle of a mystery of people dying aboard the Raptor after being lost in a jump miscalculation. To further complicate the story are some friendly Number 8’s.

Regarding a personal mystery about Gaeta, consider it solved in Webisode 1.

As for BSG 4.5, here’s a sneak peak of an upcoming broadcast episode, where Adama is not happy after Tigh came out as a Cylon.

Stay tuned. BSG 4.5 starts on January 16, 2008.

Quoted in the Diva’s Diary

Barbarella’s vlog on YouTube plugging her latest column of Diary of a Diva in the San Diego Reader.

This week in the San Diego Reader, I am quoted by Barbarella, the stylish blogger and columnist, in her latest entry of Diary of a Diva. She uses a snarky little tweet of mine to grab the reader’s attention in her discussion about online social networking where she compares it to the water cooler conversations at work, but with a little more control. You know, those conversations we all love to have on Facebook, Twitter, and even MySpace. Often, when people ask those of us who use social networking what they are about, we’re often hard pressed to explain, especially when it comes to Twitter, and Barbarella does take some time to explore that issue.

Barbarella, I enjoy your stories and your witty contributions to the online conversation. Thanks for the quote.

It’s Not Easy

Internet, blogging 3 Comments

It’s with a little difficulty that I weigh in on this issue. As someone who writes, creates art, and blogs, I am a strong believer in the freedom of speech. I have expressed my concerns and my fears regarding how my blog or any other form of online expression could be used against me. On my blog, I have a widget linking to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which serves to show that I support freedom of speech on the Internet, raise awareness of the issue, and hopefully get readers to support the EFF and other free speech organizations. However, the real test of supporting free speech comes with dealing with speech that isn’t pleasant or popular.

From an educator’s perspective, the news of someone “cyberbullying” their teacher and then filing a lawsuit following a suspension initially made me uncomfortable. Katherine Evans, a former high school AP Honors student, set up a Facebook vent group where she invited users to “to express” their “feelings of hatred” for Sarah Phelps, her English teacher. Having dealt with difficult students before, I can’t say I’m in love with what she did. However, I can empathize with her frustration and I do support her right to articulate her frustrations.

Whether she truly felt poweless against a teacher’s unprofessionalism or that she was frustrated that she may not have been learning the material, Evans does have the right to voice her grievances. Is what she did that much different from what students post on Rate My Professor? That forum is largely anonymous while the Facebook discussion was not.

When I was a graduate student, I had a mentor who treated me unprofessionally towards the end of our academic relationship. After the fallout, I was extremely alienated, hurt, and angry. My feeling that he did me an injustice was so strong that I wanted to tell everyone what a horrible human being he was. I found support with other grad students who hated him. I then did things I’m not completely proud of, such as submitting his surname as a vulgar slang word on Urban Dictionary and posting hateful comments about him on Rate My Professor. I’ve also written critical blog entries about him where I identified him as Professor Joseph K, which were mild compared to the other items. I’ve never doubted that Professor K could easily be identified or that the other items could come back to me. All I can hope for is that he does support my free speech rights, however uncomfortable my various postings can be for him.

On the flipside, I have worried that some posts I’ve done on some students could “bite me on the arse.” Here, if a student happened to access my blog and didn’t like my ventings about him or her, then they might try to get disciplinary action taken against me by the school administration. While such an expression may not be appropriate, stifling one’s voice is even more innapropriate whether it is Katherine Evans or Shinichi Evans. We may not be perfect, but we have a right to voice our opinons.

All of us have lived through an era where our government has pursued means to suppress our right to free speech, such as the PATRIOT Act. Apparently, dissent and critical opinions made Bu$h and company so uneasy that they pursued almost every means to silence people, including social sanctions. The Dixie Chicks can attest to that. Then, there are the people whose speech doesn’t sit well with a lot us, such as Fred Phelps. Of course, he and his sired church don’t care for most of us and our rights to speak out. However, to silence others because we don’t like them makes us no better than Bu$h or Phelps.

As for academic institutions who silence students or teachers, SHAME ON YOU!

Did My Dream Come True?

Internet, blogging, technology No Comments

Just when I felt hot to post today, my Macbook goes on the fritz. I had a dream a few days ago that I dropped my laptop and the monitor was shattered. Might have been an omen, though things have not happened as literally as I dreamed it. For one thing, the MacBook in the dream was one of those new aluminium kind, while the real life version is encased in white plastic. Also, my computer simply isn’t booting up.

I have the iPhone and the Wordpress app, so I’m not completely lost. Still, I am not a fan of the iPhone keyboard and I can’t copy and paste. A real keyboard is much more comfortable to type with.

I get to take my MacBook in to see a Genius tomorrow at the University Towne Center Apple Store in La Jolla. It’s much sooner than if I tried to get an appointmet at the Fashion Valley location, which would have been on Friday.

I am frustrated I couldn’t see a Genius today. I miss the early days of the Apple Store Concierge where one could sign in to see one in a few hours, but now it’s a couple of days. I should be happy I’m seeing one tomorrow. But, these problems never happen on a timetable. That would be too convenient.

Here’s to hacking it out on the iPhone,

No Flight Plan, No Problem

Here’s to continuing on. It’s too easy to get caught up in Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, or any other social networking, but there is a major disadvantage to those things. The same thing goes for Blogger, Wordpress (dot Com) and all the other things available to us for free on the Net. Those things can get yanked out from under you at anytime. Posting on those sites means that there is very little control over your content and they can take it right away from you. If someone complains or if the social networking service doesn’t like you for any reason, they can revoke your account. I’ve learned this the hard way in the middle of the year when Helium.Com revoked my account, yet kept the articles I posted. Thankfully, I didn’t post many, but I learned a crucial lesson: PAY ATTENTION TO THE TERMS OF SERVICE.

While Facebook, Flickr, and even Twitter don’t even come close to the same level of evil and sliminess of Helium, one isn’t necessarily safe.

I suppose I’m not completely safe regarding the web service I’m hosted with, but if they ever decided they wanted to eject me, I’d still have my files. I can always move on to another service and keep posting. Also, I don’t have to worry about if I forfeited ownership to my own material. Nonetheless, back up.

I’ve already had a variety of topics I’ve been doing before I tried to move in the direction of the fiction blog. I figure it’s best to return to that, but how do I come up with a soundbyte answer to describe ShindoTV? I’ve never been good with the short, condensed answer that says it all, especially if a reporter had a microphone shoved in my face. The best answer I can think of right now is that is is my online magazine. It’s in the name too, so this is my broadcast.

Thank you for tuning in to ShindoTV.

I haven’t used 12seconds much until last night, where I got a little too carried away hanging out with Melodie and Jennifer at Lestat’s. I’ve included a couple of moments of sheer dorkiness, of course.

Can’t Get You Out Of My Head

Internet, blogging, shindotv 2 Comments

No, it’s not about Kylie, but the subject makes me want to mindlessly sing “Lah la la, la la la lah…” Ever since I found out about Shindy.TV, it’s frakked with my head. To make matters worse, it’s not pronounced Shindy dot TV, but ShindyTV. It sounds a little too similar to website name of yours truly.

What is Shindy.TV exactly? It’s a website that gives information on the various happenings in San Diego. You can get info on restaurants, nightclubs, and some superfun events. Being true to the .TV domain name, ShindyTV goes out into the field and has correspondents give us mortals the skinny on what’s going on.

As for the name, it gets to me for the reason I’ve mentioned above. In all fairness, they are Shindy.TV and my website is ShindoTV. Two different entities altogether. Shindy simply is a synonym of shindig, an event or happening. Strange thing is, one of my older nicknames was Shindig. When your name is Shin, the nicknames seem to come without end. Shindo was another one I had, one that I’ve used as a pen name to this day. I’ve never been a Shindy, but it’s a little too close for comfort.

Now that Shindy.TV has a presence on Twitter, no doubt some confusion will arise. Keep in mind they are Shindy_TV and I am shindotv.

That all said, name confusions aren’t always bad.

No More Memes!

Internet, blogging 5 Comments

I will officially ignore memes from this point on. I’m not fond of the sense of obligation they create. The e-mail versions often promise luck and such for answering and forwarding to others. Sending them back to the sender should make them feel special, especially if the chain is about love or friendship. The blog versions have the element of a chain letter, but people often get tagged specifically. I’ve often ignored the e-mail forwards, but I’ve done my part with a few blog memes… until recently.

I didn’t have an agenda or anything when I broke two memes a few months ago. I just wasn’t posting.

I have no supernatural consequences hanging over my head. However, if I don’t do the meme after I’m tagged, does it mean that I am uncooperative and unfriendly?

I hope not. Friends, do not take it personally if I don’t keep up the chain or the viral replication, etc. No doubt you are thinking of me whenever you tag me, but there’s got to be another way to show me you love me.

Perhaps if the meme appeals to me, I’ll do it. However, some people simply need to get over themselves at the source. Stop writing these inane personal trivia question sets. I won’t do them when it’s my turn.

***

I recently noticed Brian and Fredo have stopped displaying blogrolls. Whether this is temporary or permanent, this trend made me think about clutter on the blog. After migrating to my own web server and using Wordpress, I didn’t want to deal with dedicating space to things not completely germane to my blog. No badges, humongously long lists, web/blog rings, directory and feeds chicklets, or any other shiny widgets. Even though it’s all about me on ShindoTV, I didn’t even want the meta-profile (links to Facebook, Flickr, GoodReads, etc) to take up more room than they should.

Regarding the blogroll, I didn’t do away with it. I just found a more appropriate place by creating a good, old-fashioned links page (see channels). As for the meta-profile, I placed it in both the channels page and the one about me.

Housekeeping should be much easier now that I’ve found a place for the guests’ shoes.

Note: I have made an exception for Twitter, but that’s it! (Well, maybe, but not enough to make some awful mess!)
