Catching Up With Benny and the Gold Lady
January 5, 2009 Resplendence, creative writing No CommentsOn the first day of September last year, I began to serialize Resplendence, that mix of art and fiction, on ShindoTV. Overall, the images and the writing form a narrative of a mentally ill young man who’s found salvation in the Gold Lady. If someone’s going to have an imaginary friend, they have got to fabulous, which the Gold Lady is. As for Benny, who has placed his faith and hope in the Gold Lady, he’s on a journey to discover his fabulosity as tries to become sane on his terms:
The Year of the Write

I took this iPhone screenshot at 8:09pm for the visual pun.
As I mentioned in yesterday’s entry, I want to stop procrastinating. It is my goal for this year, even if I might not cut out all of my bad habits. The idea is to start.
One manifestation of living on Procrastination Street is writer’s block. It is easy to put off writing because the rewards aren’t so immediate. Twittering my time away or posting witticisms on Facebook get more response, but those sentences are sent out on the quick and don’t take much process to make it into a story or a poem that expresses an idea.
Resplendence: Feuilles 21 and 22

October 22, 2008 creative writing, photography, technology No CommentsYesterday, I mentioned the CameraBag application for iPhone. I downloaded Photo Lab, which has some artistic filters one can apply to the photos on your iPhone. The options range from simply adjusting the color to rendering the image as a line drawing. For $2.99, there are 20 filters and it’s easy to use.
To show some of the effects, I used a picture I took of my friend Jaylen. First, here’s the original photo taken with iPhone’s default camera app next to one with the Auto Correction filter applied:

Left: Original. Right: Auto Correct

Left: Posterized. Right: Saturated.

Left: Line Drawing. Right: Line Drawing with Color.

Left: Stencil. Right: Sculpture.
UPDATE: While I enjoy using Photo Lab on my iPhone and tweaking the photos with it, the app has crashed on me a lot today. Please, developers of this fun product, please work things out so that there are less crashes. I will less likely bitch and moan and scream ‘FAIL!’ if you do.

October 16, 2008 Resplendence, creative writing, poetry No CommentsI see you
That skinny blond guy and his brother
are heading towards the pier.
Go to the Promenade
find a café
and text me.
I want to tell you how much I miss you
how I wept when writing the Gold Sutras
how the breakup of Lizard
was nothing compared to when you left me.
I want you back
but I know
about the Man with the 4-Way Hips.

October 16, 2008 Resplendence, creative writing, poetry No CommentsI will meet you at the café
can’t say which right now
I’m being followed.
Remember my friend I told you about
He’s behind me,
recognizes my manifestation,
saw me walk by Wild Oats
on Santa Monica Boulevard.
His brother understands what I’m saying,
speaks Japanese,
and my friend is trying to get a translation.
Thankfully, his brother is reluctant,
won’t relay a thing.
I must walk on, hang up.
I need to tell you why left Todai,
How Miyake provided me with an opportunity
I could not pass up.
I want to tell you I miss you,
want you back
but I can’t
because I have a Man.
I’ll send you a message when I’m there,
text instead of voice
so don’t be surprised if I use another manifestation.
