Paul Weller‘s odd, bromantic approach to a “Long Hot Summer” in the Style Council video from the 1980′s.
I know it’s hotter in some other parts of the country, but I’m finding the heat to be unbearable, especially with the recent humidity in San Diego. I’ve been teaching at the language school in the mornings, get to work in an old high-rise with my classes, but there’s no air conditioning to keep me cool. Office-casual attire is expected. That, and the heat leave me really drained.
Gas prices have been climbing slowly but surely, and the air conditioning has helped burn up my gas. I know it would be greener to drive without my windows, but my drive time is when I get to listen to NPR/KPBS, especially with news. Sometimes, while driving home or somewhere else in the afternoon, I get bits of Fresh Air and some other shows, but I catch up with podcasts. Of course, this is the time where the air conditioning works overtime in my car.
Then, at my summer school class at the urban college, I keep turning down the thermostat from the 70′s to the 60′s. With this heat, a 70-something degree room is too much to bear. The colder, the better. At home, I don’t use air conditioning as a household fans suffices, though not as chilly.
When I was in the 4th grade, the Okinawan heat was much more unbearable with humidity and a chilly air conditioned house was a godsend. Of course, it was a Department of Defense house on land leased from Okinawan land owners, and the US Army was footing the bill for our utilities, so my dad thought nothing of it. Of course, this mentality passed down to me and my brother, but not for long. My mother, the type of person who doesn’t waste resources if it isn’t necessary, took to using open windows and fans to cool the house after she and my father divorced. Needless to say, my brother and I still practice her approach.
Here’s to long hot summers and staying cool.

I give you my sympathy!!
It is now 3:06am and I cannot get to sleep! I wonder if its a worldwide heatwave? No one ever told me that France was going to be this hot! I am definately not a summer person! :/
Actually, what you describe (and have been describing) about France’s summer sounds worse than San Diego right now. Though, I remember some unbearable summer nights back in 2007 (a summer I wanted to fall asleep and remain so).
As for not being a summer person, me neither!
