Project Runway: We Expect Fashion

This is definitelty a Lifetime type of episode as the designers are faced with creating a beautiful, fashion-forward maternity dress. This time, there are some guest industry types involved: Rebecca Romijn (model, actress, now mother-to-be) and notable FIDM alumna Monique Lhullier, best known for her wedding gowns, who fills in for catty orange designer Michael Kors. Another made for Lifetime motif is that the panel this week is all female and they’ve all been pregnant, absolutely qualified to comment.

Big bummer this week – gender-fuck designer Malvin loses out with a risky design. Of course, the mother hen motif explained doesn’t go over well with the panel. Unfortunately, hack designer/love child of Perez Hilton and John Mayer, AKA Mitchell stays, even though his outfit execution is atrocious.

WTF – Ra’mon looks to his bowling bag for inspiration. That and the stripey dresses the Supremes would wear, with disastrous results. Also, he has boob issues.

Althea definitely has boob issues with her dress, though her dress is more flattering than Ra’mon’s.

Shirin definitely creates a lovely dress which all of the judges want to wear (thus wins), though Louise definitely has a better design instinct, as she anticipates the various stages of pregnancy.

Next week, Project Runway goes where no episode has gone before – the beach, which promises some hot mess drama.

Catch up with the second Project Runway episode “We Want Fashion.”

Project Runway. Finally!

I think I have sufficiently cleared the spoiler zone for this, but I’ll have my Project Runway-related posts go live on Monday. Of course, no one on Twitter or Facebook could shut up about the long-awaited Season Six premier, especially people who live in other time zones. Ahem.

De-Friend

“Add Me” by Chumbawamba. Title speaks clearly for the theme, but the band also gives a pretty good explanation about cyber-friendships.

Facebook has managed to change the meaning of “friend” more within three or four years than the one and a half thousand years the word has existed in English. For some other languages, we can add a few more millenia for the word’s respective counterparts. A friend on Facebook is simply someone you add, provided the other party agrees. However, the breakup is much simpler.

A Great Resource for Artists

Originally posted on The Shindobrarian.

I was looking through the New York Public Library‘s YouTube channel and I came across “Design by the Book,” a very cool series of videos discussing the importance of libraries for artists. One very important thing to note is that art never exists in a vacuum; there is no “art for art’s sake.” Whether art be dreams, an expression of beauty, a meditation on the profound, an observation, a reflection, a criticism, or analysis, or even all of the above, art is something that is deeply connected to other ideas, history, literature, science, nature, religion, or even preceding works of art. To create is to not simply wait for the muse, but to peruse, research, read, and think deeply on various things. Even the most utilitarian forms of expression can benefit from visits to the library.

Original Database

Last week, I took some pictures in the San Diego Central Library, and I came across this card catalog cabinet, which is very rare. Most of the other branches in the San Diego Public Library system has phased them out, especially with modern facilities out in suburbia. Central Library, however, is still in a antiquated, late 1930′s building. Even with modern equipment here and there, there are reminder’s of the library’s past. This is definitely a beautiful reminder.

Shindo Sartorial: Bow Ties

IMG_10764To wear a bow tie is to ask for attention. I definitely knew this was the case when I started to wear them two weeks ago, but once I put one around my neck, I’ve been noticed ever since, even after wearing bow ties several times.

I have always wanted to get at least one bow tie, but I’ve never known where to get them until recently. Of course, on the great marketplace of the Internet, there are websites such as Beau Ties Ltd, where they offer a variety of ties with colors and patterns ranging from elegant to very quirky. They even have videos to teach men how to tie their bow ties, including one for the lefties (which is how I learned). In addition to the online tie shops, I also found that some online clothiers, such as J. Crew and Brooks Brothers also offered their own takes on this eccentric accessory. There is no shortage of places to buy a bow tie online. But what if I wanted the experience of handling and sampling the item before buying?

Drip, Drip, Drip

Photo 171

This morning, I found this lovely newsbit on Twitter: Some coffeehouses in NYC are pulling the plug on laptop users. Then, I had some Twitter conversation with Brian and Kyle* on the issue and then some more reactions on Facebook, as I posted the article link to my “wall.” For the past few years, I have made decisions about which coffee houses I go to based on if they offer WIFI. In fact, I am writing this post from Starbucks, from which I get all the WIFI I want while I’m here. Which brings me to another subject.

The Shindobrarian

Sometimes I feel a little too spread thin with all my online “me’s,” especially with Twitter, Facebook, and this blog. Friendfeed seems to have taken on a life of its own mainly because my tweets go to it, but some profiles, such as Plurk and 12 Seconds languish. In starting this MLIS program at San Jose State University‘s online program, I have a few more virtual selves to contend with. To add to that, I have also created the Shindobrarian blog back in March when I got news of my acceptance into the program. I haven’t updated much since then until recently, when I put some library oriented posts up. However, they mirror the ones I put up here.

I created the Shindobrarian as the blog with a specific audience: fellow MLIS students and librarians. The ShindoTV one — I’m still not clear about it except to post whatever comes to mind. I just want a blog I wouldn’t mind coming back to again and again. Of course, I post the library ones here because they may be the ones that I write when inspired, but I then cross-post them on the Shindobrarian. The general idea for the Shindobrarian is to post things I’m learning about the library profession, but also to post on thing relevant, whether it’s articles, news, humor, etc. I’ll see how it goes, especially as I get to know more and more of this students, whether in real life or the online realm. I’ll look around for sure, but if anyone knows about any good MLIS or librarian oriented blogs, send them my way.

Gorilla Suit – The New Interview Costume

What’s a man to do when he’s properly qualified for a job, yet seems to have a hard time finding one? Perhaps suing the alma mater university is one option, but when he really needs a job, some more immediate action is necessary. Dumb down one’s resume, play down job accomplishments, or just talk it up are some options. Here, a desperate man resorts to dressing up like a gorilla, which appeals to some warped affirmative action, British style. Gotta love Monty Python for that.
