Resplendence: Feuille 15

The mall had lots of nice stores in the old buildings but there were no cars on the street. The streets were filled with shoppers, people trying to sell things, and other people playing their guitars and singing. We walked by two girls who sounded like opera singers and Dylan started talking about how they had bad voices and couldn’t sing. I told him to shut up, that I liked their singing, and he said sorry.

The first store we went into was a nice big bookstore (not Barnes & Noble), even though there was one in the mall). Dylan told me the bookstore was independent, that it was important to buy your books from independent bookstores, that Barnes & Noble shouldn’t be the only bookstore around. When my brother cares about a subject, he goes on and on.

Dylan told me to look around; if there was anything I wanted, he would buy it for me. I decided to look for stories because that’s what Shin told me he liked when he worked at the hospital. I walked up to a girl who worked there, asked her where the stories were, and she pointed to a sign that read “Fiction and Literature.” I thanked her, walked to the shelves. and tried to look for something that Shin would read, but he never told me what writers he liked.

Banana Yoshimoto’s Amrita had a picture of a pretty girl crying golden tears. Maybe she was related to the Gold Lady. I grabbed Amrita and Naked by David Sedaris. Dylan asked me if I was sure I wanted these books, said that they were very long and had no pictures in them, and I said, “Yes, I want these.”
