We went to L.A. today. We tried listening to CD’s in Dylan’s car but I didn’t like any of the music he liked. Too much Ministry and Nine Inch Nails—too noisy, not enough fun. He was driving so I guess he could pick the music, but I wanted to hear something fun while I looked out the window at all the crops we passed. That was so neat to watch. He eventually put Madonna’s Music into the CD player. I’m sure he would not want to admit to his friends that he played a Madonna CD in his car. I think Dylan worries too much about being cool, that he worries about what others think about him.

As we drove into L.A., Dylan talked about how cool it would be to live there. I nodded; yes, it would be col to live there. The Gold Lady and the Man with the 4-Way Hips live in this area, in Santa Monica.

We parked in a parking lot at a subway station in West L.A., but it was closed because the workers were on strike. We then drove out west, passing an electronic billboard on top of a building, and there were signs everywhere in Chinese, Korean, and Spanish. As we passed UCLA, Dylan pointed to the campus and told me that’s where he went to college. Everywhere we go, the signs change from Chinese to Spanish to Korean and back to Chinese, over and over. I think the Gold Lady can speak all of these languages, and I know she can speak Japanese because she grew up there. Me, I only know a little bit of Spanish from the 9th grade.
