Updates 2

Today has been a hazier day than the deceptive clarity of yesterday (within San Diego proper). The sunlight ‘s paler and has more of a yellowish cast, so it feels more like it’s a few hours later, very late afternoon. More like 5:00 instead of 2:30.

Seventh and C at 1pm.

This morning, ash was everywhere. It lightly covered my car and dotted the suburban landscape. When I arrived at downtown to teach at the language school, the sidewalks and streets were covered with ashes, but less noticeable. I only noticed them on the black chairs outside of the Super Junior Market on Seventh and Broadway. After class was over, I walked up the hill to Sole Luna and the air was still hazy and small bits of ash were flying everywhere.

View of Downtown from Sole Luna Cafe. The air is very hazy in the East Village District (far background). Taken from Seventh and Ash.

Channel 10 news has been running nonstop. The damage in Rancho Bernardo is freaky with no rhyme or reason. There are several houses that are burned to the ground, while other houses on the same block are still standing.

There’s now an arson investigation to find out the cause of the fires.

President Bush is scheduled to make appearances tomorrow. Thanks, but his idiotic voice acknowledging what happened on Monday or even Tuesday would have been nice. Hopefully, he’ll mumble and stammer through something appropriate. At least his timing is better than it was for Hurricane Katrina.

For those of you whose thoughts and prayers are with us at time, thanks.

Silly Aside

Here is a break from the fire. I found this widget on Red Moon Cafe, so I went to creator’s site and used my URL to get this result:

My blog is worth $7,339.02.
How much is your blog worth?

This reminds me of the widget that showed what movie rating applied to a blog. I remember mine was rated R. I don’t know what criteria determines the value, but it’s a nice distraction.

Just for the hell of it, I also entered in the addresses of some other blogs.

Brian
:

My blog is worth $3,951.78.
How much is your blog worth?

Chris:

My blog is worth $7,339.02.
How much is your blog worth?

Ted had the highest value of anyone I put in:

My blog is worth $24,275.22.
How much is your blog worth?

Danny
had the second highest:

My blog is worth $12,984.42.
How much is your blog worth?

Just a little silliness. Enjoy.

Updates

Just taking a few minutes to post.

@ Boi From Troi – sorry if it initially seemed like I was skewering you. I wasn’t. I was glad to see a fellow Southern Californian mentioning the fires. That James Hartline is such a local nuisance and I doubt anyone would vote for him on City Council. He is, however, so loud and obnoxious and it pisses me off to no end, especially when he makes statements like he did about the fires. It’s easy for him to make these judgments from Hillcrest, which wasn’t affected at all. Unlike Lot in the Old Testament, he didn’t feel compelled to flee from “Sodom.”

@Chris – Yes, I was pissed. I almost went on and on. It wasn’t the only thing that angered me at the time. On Monday, right in the midst of the disaster and Arnold Schwarzenegger declaring a state of emergency in Southern California, Bush asks Congress for $196 for war funds. This under normal circumstances would peeve me, but considering Southern California is a disaster area, this is very insulting.

I am still off from teaching community college this week. However, I got called in to the language school where I occasionally teach to cover for someone who’s been impacted by the fire.

I’ll keep you all posted. Thanks for tuning in to ShindoTV.

Some People Are Truly Pieces of Work

I know I’ve broken the record for posts per day on ShindoTV, but this broadcast comes to you courtesy of Boi from Troi:

Of course, it is also a good time for the religious right to make fools of themselves. Now they’re blaming the Gays for the San Diego wildfires, which begs the question of why West Hollywood, Hillcrest, Silverlake and Long Beach seem to have been spared the wrath of the flames so far!

Within that paragraph was a link to a blogpost from James Hartline, a local religious nutjob and self hating gay man with AIDS, about how Hoe Moe sexuals caused the fires. Boi is a better man than I. I refuse to give that frak Hartline any traffic. You’ll have to go third party if you want to hear that idiot’s brainfried rant.

Hartline is the same headcase who bent the Catholic Bishop of San Diego’s ear a few years ago so the late owner of Club Montage could not have a proper funeral. I’ll stop because I don’t have a kind thing to say about him.

How Frakked Up Is This?

Larry Himmel of Channel 8 covers the destruction of his home during the fires.
Normally someone with a great sense of humor, Himmel carries himeslf with a great deal of professionalism and does his job.

My proverbial hat’s off to him. I’d be a definite mess if I were in his shoes. And then there’s the walkthrough.

Found on Flickr: San Diego Fire

San Diego Fire, originally uploaded by Armida the Diva.

This pic is eerie! I don’t know where this is exactly, but this is one the spookiest pictures I encountered so far regarding the fires. The thought that part of the smoke comes from burned down houses is unsettling. My heart goes out to the people who have lost their homes so far.

If you’re locally here in San Diego, tune in to 94.9 FM, which has kindly provided the signal for KPBS. Keep updated, be generous and donate to the evacuation centers (and show generosity in any way possible), and make sure those who lost their homes don’t get taken in by the hucksters.

For those of you outside of Southern California, your thoughts and prayers are appreciated.

Found on Flickr: The sun has an eerie glow to it.

I just found this on Flickr. This is what today’s sunset looked like. A few years ago in the aftermath of the Cedar Fires, when the whole county was engulfed in smoke, there was red sunlight one day. It was eerily apocalyptic. It hasn’t come to that yet where I live, but I wonder about other areas of the county that are still covered in smoke.
