I went on a day hike along Aero Drive with the intention of walking up to the Sunroad building to photograph it. I could have easily driven to the controversial high rise in Kearny Mesa area in San Diego, but a walk was more fun. Besides, I got a few more photos of Aero Drive and Montgomery Field.
In a lot that formerly belonged to General Dynamics, Spectrum has been developing a residential and commercial district next to office parks and Montgomery Field, an airport. The Sunroad building, a tower amongst buildings that are 4 stories high at the most, has been a source of contention with the City of San Diego and the FAA due to being too tall. 160 feet is a height that would satisfy regulations, but the Sunroad is 180 feet tall. The builders have reluctantly agreed to engineer the building to a more compliant height (no telling when), so I wanted to get some photos of it before they changed it to another box in Kearny Mesa.
The photos are not in order. More are avaialable in my Flickr photoset, and they are more or less in chronological order.
The lovely Sunroad building in the Spectrum development in Kearny Mesa (largely a commercial district in San Diego). The rooftop, a remarkable architectural feature, may be lost with the building’s height being reduced.
