Eureka, Season 2: The Games People Play

Much of this post was originally in my sneak peak teaser from Saturday.

In Eureka, nothing is what it seems, especially banal things such as a noise complaint call. When Carter and Jo look into the disturbance, they find a scientist with an incredibly noisy machine with many gyrating components. Carter gets clubbed on the head after standing too close (not one of his smartest moves), and reality falls apart for him shortly after.

This episode is reminiscent of Star Trek: TNG’s “Remember Me” and “Parallels.” Like “Remember Me,” people keep disappearing into never-existence but Carter and Eureka’s history keeps adjusting where he experiences some alternate scenarios like in “Parallels.” The changing scenarios also reminds me of Sliders. How they handle continuity with Carter as the constant is very clever. Pay attention to what happens to one of the props after one or two people disappear.

Is this all a result of Carter getting bonked on the head? Is Carter going crazy? Is the universe truly coming apart? Are parallel realities intersecting where they shouldn’t? Or, is there something else at work?

Without giving much more away, Carter’s keeping his emotions close to his vest has something to do with reality unraveling itself. Are his emotions that powerful? Perhaps, but nothing is as it initially seems in Eureka. The emotional angle of the story, which gives “The Games People Play” one of its mysteries, is a strong part of this show and makes it a rewarding view.

Check out iTunes tomorrow and scifi.com for the episode.

Open Letter to an Ex-Boss

In publicly bringing closure to this whole bad job issue from last year, I post this open letter to the lovely woman who was my boss for six months.

—— ———
The Company
K&OM Ith Avenue
Ste. LMM
San Diego, CA 92JML

Dear Ms. ———,
Towards the end of my exit interview back in January, you expressed that you hoped I wouldn’t feel any bitterness towards the Company. I must say, though, that I have nothing but good feelings and joyful thoughts towards you and the Company that you represent. My experience with the Company has been one of the most positive in my working life.

First of all, I must commend you on your ability to spend the Company’s money. Some of your choices may be extravagant, but it’s definitely for the long term good. When we moved into our new office, state of the art appliances were installed. The refrigerator and the dishwasher did not match, so in your infinite wisdom, you had a perfectly good (and brand new) dishwasher yanked out and brought in another. You showed you can accessorize for the good of the shareholders and that you can prevail over the accountant, the ultimate corporate spoilsport.

I shall always remember your dazzling interpersonal skills. There are the times where you calmly instructed me on how I should do my job. You always had something very kind to say at the proverbial drop of a hat. I will always look back upon you as someone who treated me with a great deal of humanity. One of my most indelible encounters with you was an open door meeting when you exuberantly praised me in your office for a job well done so everyone can hear. Your smile was memorable as it demonstrated to me that the Company under your leadership was a happy and safe place to work. It also showed me your friendliness and how much you really liked me.

Thank you for the invaluable experience of working for the Company. I shall recommend it as a wonderful place with plenty of growth potential, especially under your guidance.

With very warm regards,

Shinichi Evans

The Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls Booth

Milky Way Galaxy Girls Booth, originally uploaded by shindohd.

This was a happy accident right before I left Comic-Con. This booth caught my eye, I had to take a picture of it, and I was soon having a conversation with Lauren Faust, the artist and writer behind the Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls. She happily explained to what they were all about. While they are superficially reminiscent of the Power Puff Girls (on which Faust was an animator), the Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls are older, hipper, more individualistic, and definitely more fun. Each girl personifies a celestial body with the style and flair to go with their names. For example, the Sun is definitely a heliocentric diva who believes the universe revolves around her, the silver-clad Mercury is the fastest athlete in the universe, and the lovely but solitary Moon expresses her being in poetry. Best of all, these girls traverse outer space in roller skates that go with their unique outfits.

Faust has created a visually fantastic book which tells the reader all about the Galaxy Girls and asks the question, “Which planet are you from?” The book and other merchandise are a lot of fun (and thoughtfully done), and I will definitely tune in when Galaxy Girls enter the world of animation.

Stay tuned… And check out the Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls.

Here are some pics to show what they’re all about:

The Gothgirl rocker Pluto, the center of the Universe herself the Sun, and the Starry Eyed Space Girl.

The lyrically poetic Moon, the artsy Mars, and the sweetly caring Jupiter.

Sunday at Comic Con

Fantastic Four, originally uploaded by shindohd.

They’re young and good looking, so I wanted to begin this entry with this version of the Fantastic Four. While they’re not purely in costume, they have definitely have a theme, and these shirts are wearable conversation pieces outside of Comic-Con. I should have asked them for the ordering information because seeing them in these tees makes me want to get one myself.

I took many pictures of people in costume, but here are some of my favorites:

Pris and Roy Annie Lennox meets Vulcan Superman and Trinity X-wing Pilot

Pris and Roy from Bladerunner, Annie Lennox meets Vulcan, Superman and Trinity, and X-Wing Pilot.

The Blade Runner couple was so in character in their costumes. The Annie Lennox effect on this woman’s Vulcan look was very striking. The Superman model was absolutely hot and Trinity looked like she could kick ass! The X-Wing fighter pilot looked very good in his uniform.

The blond Vulcan is in the cast of the upcoming Star Trek fan film World Enough and Time, which also features George Takei.

Man Bat

This handsome guy worked for the Mattel exhibit. I liked his t-shirt.

Donkey Kong Player

If you wanted to relive the good old days of 1980′s video games, you could play Donkey Kong like this guy was. I remember Nintendo made a hand held version of the game (but this may have been limited to Japan). Does anyone remember the pocket version with LCD in the US market?

Greg Evans

Here is local cartoonist Greg Evans (not related) who does the nationally syndicated comic Luann.

Some quirky moments at Comic-Con on Sunday afternoon: a guy was giving free high-fives (and counting them), while two young women gave free hugs more altruistically.

Free High Fives Free Hugs

Every day at Comic Con was extremely crowded. Essentially, attendance was sold out. Here is a crowd picture to give an idea of how many people were at the Convention Center on Sunday afternoon.

Overall, an excellent episode with some surprises in store. I just can’t give them away right now. Stay tuned this coming Tuesday, 9:00pm on the Sci Fi Channel.

Vader Miranda Arte Brut Vader Death Starry Night

These Darth Vader masks were among the fun things I saw at Comic-Con yesterday. Perhaps the menace factor is lost here, but Anakin would at least have a few options if he wanted to vary his appearance. My favorite one has to be the Carmen Miranda mask (absolutely hilarious!), but I like the Van Gogh mask on a conceptual level (and the pun is wonderful). There is a subtle option for Vader if he wanted something different yet remain intimidating:

Bling Vader

With subtle black glittery paint and diamonds at the vocoder, Darth Vader could get his bling on at any A-list party and still frighten Imperial troops into submission.

Jabba with Vampira

This is a “life size” reproduction of Jabba. I was hoping to get a pic without people, but many people kept posing in front of him, especially women. I figured if I had to get a pic with a woman, it might as well be a busty Vampira. Definitely a more fun juxtaposition than some others. Princess Leia had to be chained to Jabba’s throne, but Vampira’s willing.

Me at Comic-Con

Here I am by the Sci Fi Channel attraction. They had iMac terminals where you could check out Sci Fi panels and screenings, and this is how I got on board with the Eureka events. There was also a guy who passed out Laura Roslin (BSG) pins on Wednesday night and Nathan Stark (Eureka) yesterday. I took a few Starks – hotness times 4 or five.

Speaking of Nathan Stark and Eureka, I attended the panel in the late afternoon (which was very well attended). They gave some insights in what’s going on in the show’s storylines. Joe Morton (best known to non-Eureka viewers as The Brother From Another Planet) shed some light on Henry’s motivations and teased us with what’s in store. We also learn that one of Colin Ferguson’s favorite episodes is one that’s going to air this week. They all looked very good in person, especially Ed Quinn and Colin Ferguson. Both guys were hot, but Ed Quinn is much hotter in person.

I later went to a screening where they showed the Eureka episode that will be aired this coming Wednesday (I’ll try to tease instead of spoil).

300 was heavily promoted the past few days at Comic-Con. The DVD’s weren’t anywhere in site, but people were walking around with paper Spartan shields and there was a screening last night at Petco Park. I haven’t come across the King Leonidas action figure with faithfully reproduced abs and package, but I’m sure I will at some point. Outside the convention center, there was a truck advertising 300. The DVD is released this Tuesday.

Some Warning Signs You’re About To Be Terminated

This article is featured today in Helium‘s front page. I wrote about it a few months ago and forgot about it. Getting fired is never fun, even when it’s in a bad job situation, but it is fair game for material. It was approximately one year and a week ago when I was hired in that awful job with that awful boss, and I’ll have to see you next Tuesday if you want my opinion on her. It was my first and only time working in an office environment. I’m allergic to cubicles, among many things, as a result.

I have only been fired from one job in my life. It was my first time working in an office environment and I was not apparently a good fit. I went from teaching to running a mail room and a lot of mistakes were made. I tried to take it in stride as I was new to the job and the stress and the mistakes were a part of it. I went through a 90 day probation period and still had my job. However, my employer was not happy. There were a few signs, especially right towards the very end.

1. Delegation of responsibilities to others. Some of my responsibilities were taken away at an early stage and given to my boss’s administrative assistant. This occurred during the 90 day probation period, so I didn’t think much of it. However, this was definitely the first sign of doubt my employer had in me.

2. Someone screaming for termination. I had to make a rush order to the printer for an event. After the printing, it needed to be mailed out by a certain deadline by an outsourced mail house, which it wasn’t. The person in charge of the event was not happy with me at all and yelled at my boss to fire me. While they did not fire me at that moment, the incident certainly lingered in the mind of my boss and reinforced earlier doubts.

3. Management withholding resources. The company recently moved to another office, where new resources were needed. A security system for doors at the office’s entrance was installed, and a coded key to be scanned at the doors was required. The accountant, who was in charge of issuing the keys, refused to issue me one, saying “There are going to be some changes and some people are going to be fired.” While my name wasn’t mentioned and he even said “It’s not a reflection on you,” his roundabout phrasing indicated I was going to get fired.

4. Being isolated by others. The receptionist was one of the most popular people at the office. Whenever a co-worker was facing termination, the receptionist was instructed to keep her distance. I became good friends with her while working at the office, but a month before I was fired, I was instructed to keep my distance from her. A roundabout reason was given that didn’t seem to fit. However, I did feel very isolated from her and the people that now formed her clique.

5. Micromanagement. When I received an e-mail from my boss asking that I send her weekly reports, I knew I was in trouble. I was never required to keep a log detailing weekly activities before and the only logs I turned in before were those that recorded mailings. My boss’s request for a weekly report indicated I was being watched. At first, she said she needed it because she was out of the office a lot, but she bluntly told me some time later she did not know what I did with my time.

6. Unexplained changes in management’s behavior. At one point, I made a mistake in photocopying a document to be mailed out, resulting in a few thousand that could not be mailed out. My boss was furious and yelled at me without inviting me to close her office door when meeting with her. She was openly hostile. The next time I reported to work, she was extremely nice to me leading up to my firing two weeks later. Essentially, management had to cover their tracks and avoid a hostile firing.

7. Unofficial warning. A few of the other signs were in place when this occurred. However, this is one that hit me over the head. The accountant, a member of the management team, pulled me aside on day and issued me an unofficial warning that “some people” were not happy with me and wanted me fired. While he was not my direct supervisor, he essentially gave me an informal performance review, which was not good. I tried to improve my job performance; however, I knew I had to shop my resume out.

8. Changing of the locks. In my case, it was the locks on my cubicle file drawers and cabinets. I saw a new lock on my desk on termination day. While this should have been obvious, this went over my head until I was fired later in the day.

These warning signs are some of the things I observed before getting canned. You may experience some of these same things, or you may have a slightly different experience.

If you’re able to get another job lined up whenever the proverbial handwriting is on the wall, do it. Jumping ship before you get fired saves you from telling your new employer why you got fired. Unemployment takes a while to process, so the new job also saves you from this hassle. Work the resume. Use all the sites and resources you can within the time you have. Don’t just quit unless you have another job to go to.

Kevin Spacey’s character in American Beauty tells off management and wittily coerces them into giving him a nice severance package, but remember this is a fantasy scenario in a movie. If you are in a meeting about your firing, handle yourself in a civil manner and ask about what kind of reference they are going to give you. Severance may be in the discussion, though that is something you would want to take to an attorney.

Read the “handwriting,” so to speak. The time you’re getting clues about getting the axe is a good time to evaluate if this is the job you want. You may have taken the job, not because it’s your passion, but for the pay. Look into what you want to do and go after it. Getting fired has a way of making people examine their career choices; however, the examination should occur earlier.

I Crush Their Heads

If you’ve watched the Kids in the Hall, then you’re familiar with the Head Crusher skit. During Pride weekend, I got some head crushing pics. Kerry crushes my head in the left pic; however, I don’t get to return the favor as he proceeds to crush his own head.

I get crushed Kerry crushes his own head

These two were done way before pride, where I crushed the heads of people in coffee shops: anonymous Wi-Fi user (top) at Twiggs, and Gigio, co-proprietor of Sole Luna in Downtown San Diego’s Cortez Hill neighborhood (bottom).

Yikes! They’re All In San Diego

When Brian said he should call the legion of fanboys down on me (for Eureka spoilers), it occurred to me that they are in San Diego for the next few days. Comic-Con is going on for the an extended weekend (and it’s sold out), so there should be too many people for the San Diego Convention Center. I went to the Sneak Preview tonight, and there were tons of people in the Exhibit Hall. All the usual vendors were there along with the big players – SciFi Channel, Warner Brothers, 300 (DVD promotion), several major publishers, and some upcoming movies. Needless to say, the fanboys were in full force tonight. I wonder how many of them were in Brian’s network.

Here are some reasons why I should worry:

  1. Brian can provide them with online pics of what I look like.
  2. I plan to come to Comic-Con for at least a few hours per day.
  3. They may see me at Comic-Con and recognize me by the pics.
  4. I plan to attend the Eureka panel.

Reason why I shouldn’t worry:

  1. There is plenty of shopping to be done in the Exhibit Hall.
  2. There are plenty of promo’s to collect.
  3. There are plenty of screenings.
  4. There are plenty of panels.
  5. With so many kindred spirits under one roof, there is plenty of opportunity to hook up and get laid. There is nothing like geek love.

Life’s too short. I can’t live in fear of the fanboy equivalent of Al Gay-da (where there’s some overlap). Neil Gaiman is going to be there. I’d love to meet him for sure, sign my copy of American Gods.
