Major “Frak You!” to Maxim for homophobia.
Listing Sanjaya as a “Today’s Girl“? I’m not really one of his fans, but this is not cool. Dudes, he is not a girl. Perhaps the “thugs at Maxim“* are harboring some secret fantasies, as all the other Today Girls are hot, buxom babes (who might as well wear nothing). Sorry, the juxtaposition seems to suggest that, though giving Sanjaya this dubious honor is a detractor’s tactic. They don’t have to like him, but misogyny and homophobia are a horrible weapon.
*I liked Ted’s phrase for for the Maxim gang.

I think this one rolled off my back because.. it’s Maxim. There’s really just one reason for most men to buy a copy of that magazine and they’re exactly the kind of men that would call a long-haired unconventional AI contestant a “girl”.
(probably the same men afraid to admit they still have a Kenny G album and that they thought Michael Bolton “had soul”)
I know Maxim buyers are interested in one thing and one thing only. That’s how Kylie can be on a cover a few years back. Are they interested in her music or what she’s about? Maybe not. I could be wrong about aggressively straight metrosex readers.
If they’re not nice, I’ll have to channel Tyra and storm their offices screaming!
I’ve never had a subscription to Maxim. I’ve had subscriptions to Playboy, though. If I’m gonna look at a woman in a magazine, she’s gonna be naked. And, if I’m looking at a woman, she won’t look like Sanjaya.
I think my irritation surrounding Sanjaya is that he began to show arrogance despite his glaring lack of talent. He clearly should have been gone in week one of the finals. I don’t care if he has design sense or not.
In defense of Maxim and other media who have a distinct demographic to serve, I just won’t buy your stuff. But you go ahead and publish your stuff. After all, I’m probably not in your demo, and I’m not buying it.
Maxim‘s never really pissed me off until now. Yeah, the sexy girl thing is something that would get feminists riled up, but that one has typically been done in good fun. Using it to degrade someone, design sense* or none, talented or none, crosses the line. If someone doesn’t like Sanjaya, he’s fair game to be criticized or made fun of, but some things are hitting below the belt.
*a Mr. Deity word for gays
Fair enough.
Say, it’s OK to use euphemisms, right?
Euphemisms are cool. I like design sense, for example.
